It was estimated that around 3.5 billion tickets were sold across India in 2011. Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Trivandrum, Banglore, Kochi and Hyderabad were considered as major hubs of film production in India.
In 2013, India was rewarded as first among countries to produce maximum annual film output. In 2000, the overall profit of Indian cinema jumps to the US $ 1.3 billion. The Indian cinema industry is diversified by languages. Bollywood industry names to film industry producing Hindi movies and it is the largest sector producing 43% of box office revenues.
History of Indian Cinema
The history of Indian cinema begins from the beginning of the film era. Professor Stevenson presents a film in 1897, features a stage show at Calcutta’s Star Theatre. After this, an Indian photographer made a silent film or can call as a film of scenes from the show. H.S Bhatavdekar show wrestling match at the hanging garden in Bombay was the first official film to be shot by Indian and it was the first Indian documentary film.
Shree Pundalik was the first Indian movie. This movie was silent movie and was in the Marathi language. This movie was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. He was the person who produced a full-length motion picture and he is considered a pioneer of the Indian film industry.
Dada Saheb Phalke was considered as the father of Indian cinema and he was the person who released the first full-length movie ‘Raja Harishchndra” in 1913. It was also the first movie that was screened in Landon in 1914.
The Parsi entrepreneur namely Jamshedji Framji Madan owned the first chain of Indian cinema and he oversaw the production of 10 films annually.
Beginning of Talkies
“Alam Ara” was the first talkie by Ardeshir Irani and was screened in Bombay in 1931. This movie is considered as first movie with sound in India. The music director of ‘Alam Ara’ was Phiroz shah.
After the success of this movie, multiple production companies raised and this lead to a sudden rise in the production of the number of movies.
Growth of Regional Movies
In India, not only Bollywood movies reach the top of the heights but public also loved other regional movies. ‘Nal Damyanti’ was the first Bengali feature film and it was produced by J.F. Madan with an Italian actor as a lead actor.
‘Jamai Shashthi’ was the first talkie movie in Bengali and was screened in 1931. Madan theater produced this movie. The film industry of south India was also very developed. Apart from the Bengali and South Indian film industry, the film industry of other states also made good marks.
Bollywood- The pioneer of Masala Movies
Bollywood masala movie came into existence after 1970. Many actors like Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and many other captivate and mesmerize the audience by their aura. The honor of “father of masala movies” was honored to Manmohan Desai.
Amitabh Bachchan is still considered as the superstar of the century and it was Sholay movie who produce this superstar. This record-breaking Sholay movie was directed by Ramesh Sippy got international accolades. An audience can not forget the splendid and extraordinary performance of Rekha in the movie name Umrao Jaan.
Kids of 1990 look an entirely new batch of several factors namely Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Chiranjivi, Juhi Chawla, and many more. These actors of the new generation used new action and expressions, techniques and ways of acting that enhanced their performances. this is the reason that further elevates and upgrade the Indian film industry.
The Indian film industry was gifted with the notable year of 2008 in which A.R Rehman received two academy awards for Slumdog Millionaire.
Now the Indian film industry is not limited in India but is also appreciated by international audiences also.
